Our Indigenous School Health Framework, a document developed in consultation with and led by Canada's aboriginal communities, has been noticed world-wide, with presentations by CoP Chair Shirley Tagalik at the November 2009 American School Health Conference and the July international school health symposium in Geneva.(Posted Mar 3-10)
Leadership is also being demonstrated by another Chair of one of our Communities of Practice (CoP). Mary McKenna, from UNB and Chair of the School Nutrition CoP, was instrumental in initiating a recent national meeting of government officials on school nutrition policies. (Posted Feb 28-10)

CASH is also collaborating with the 50+ members of the Canadian School Health NGO Network to find ways to use web 2.0 (social networking tools) more effectively. Potential activities include shared access to a Twitter account that "follows" health and education feeds from a wide variety of organizations, joint posting on the "CSH Tweets" that are also posted on this web site and posting updates directly onto our School Health Blog. The National School Health Conference for 2009-10 will be held in Halifax in mid-April. Watch for more details here. The theme will be on how advocates of healthy schools, community schools and safe schools can work together to support schools serving disadvantaged communities. (Updated January 15-10)
CASH is working with nine other national organizations to develop a Consensus Statement on School Mental Health. This statement will be used to influence the development of youth mental health framework as well as the overall national MH strategy being developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. As well, the statement will be the basis of input into a similar initiative developing a mental health component of the national Healthy Living Strategy. CASH has working with the National Collaborating Centre on Aboriginal Health, the CCL Aboriginal Learning Centre and the Centre of Excellence on Special Needs to prepare a culturally relevant approach to SH for aboriginal students, schools and communities. A literature review and inventory has been completed. A statement of principles has been developed and can be found at: http://aboriginalschoolhealth.wetpaint.com/ CASH is pleased to announce that it will be working with the Centre on Addictions & Mental Health at the University of Western Ontario on a handbook/webinar project that will provide advice and tools to implement the principles established in the paper. The CSH Knowledge Network list of SH contacts has grown to over 2900 people and over 250 agencies/individuals have either paid a membership fee or contributed their time/expertise to receive additional services. The next step begins this month, as we move the contacts list and other communications into a professional networking web site at www.canadianschoolhealth.ca. Agencies, organizations and individuals wil be able to post theor own profiles, interact with others and visit/receive RSS feeds from the daily blog of SH news.
