This collection began as a series of reviews to funded by the Health & Learning Knowledge Centre (HLKC) of the Canadian Council on Learning. The goal of the series was to address selected topics. Based on that initial collection, this collection has grown into a more comprehensive listing. These reviews have been combined with other work funded by the HLKC to begin a World School Health Encyclopedia and Knowledge Exchange program that is being led by the international School Health Network.

  • Systems-based Approach to School Health Promotion: A Scan of the Research (2006)
    This wide-ranging scan of the research provides a rationale for using an ecological and systems-based approach to school health promotion, safety and social development.

  • Bullying and Violence Prevention in Schools: A Focus on Personal and Social Development (2006)
    Reviews research supporting positive personal and social development in children and youth as a predominant focus of efforts aimed at preventing violence in schools.

  • Gender Equity & Schools: A Review of the Research (2006)
    This review reports on what research tells about the historical development and the current state of knowledge regarding gender equity in schools, as well as the strategies used to address these issues.

  • School-based Smoking Prevention Programs: A Review of the Research on Effectiveness (2005)
    This review focuses on the effectiveness of school-based approaches to smoking prevention among adolescents, limitations to these approaches, and implications for future research and policy initiatives.

  • Mental Health & Schools: A Review of the Research (2005)
    The purpose of this review is to better understand child and adolescent mental health and its’ impact on social and cognitive functioning, discuss the influence of the social and physical environment of the school on mental health problems, and identify national and international initiatives in school mental health promotion in order to outline which aspects have shown promise. This report will focus primarily on three main issues within the context of mental health, namely; stress, anxiety, and suicide.

  • School Social Climate: A Research Review (2006)
    The review has been organized into three areas: Firstly, the psychosocial influences which affect the school climate and school culture. Secondly, the approaches, programs and strategies that seek to influence the nature and impact of the school’s social environment, culture, climate or ethos. Thirdly, there will be discussion around the applications of organizational effectiveness and improvement along with organizational change processes as they relate to school climate and school culture.

  • From Traditional Health Education to Health Literacy: A Review of the Research (2006)
    In this review paper, we attempted to focus on health literacy issues among school-age children and summarize relevant studies, articles, and documents that address this issue, and relevant concepts from educational and promotional perspectives. Our goal is to identify any works in Canada and across the world that aimed to assess or find links between health education provided in school and students’ behavioral modification or adaptation pattern, as well as their health literacy

  • School-based Health Centres: A Research Review of Implementation, Sustainability and Educational Outcomes (2006)
    This review is meant to inform policy makers and planners in education and health as they consider how such youth such targeted approaches may be helpful to Canadian students. Explored are: i) the impact of SBHCs on utilization of health care services; ii) connections to educational outcomes; iii) roles and responsibilities for, and coordination of,
    SBHCs; iv) the impact of the physical, social and political environments of schools and communities on provision of SBHCs; and, v) sustainability of SBHCs.
