Featuring School Health Research & News

The feature article this month is an analysis and listing of school health research articles and reviews as well as news media reports from January 2010. As we begin our membership renewal campaign for the paying members of the School Health Knowledge Network, we have partnered with the International School Health Network to offer a free subscription to the ISHN Blog and Web Site (www.schoolhealthinsider.org) that tracks research, news, web sites and a variety of networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, SlideShare and more that are increasingly using these new media for professional purposes.

So, in addition to 30 excellent webinars, reduced conference registration fees and a variety of other services, members of the School Health Knowledge Network will receive a free annual subscription (valued at $60.00) to this ISHN service that identifies SH articles from over 50 journals and research review web sites, over 40 news media outlets and over 10 new media networking platforms. The CSH Knowledge Network list of SH contacts has grown to over 2500 people. We are continuing to transfer the email contacts lists over to the professional networking web site at www.canadianschoolhealth.ca. Agencies, organizations and individuals will be able to control the email they receive from this wiki-based web site through their own profiles. The Fall/Winter (2009) issue of the CTF-CASH Health and Learning Magazine is currently being distributed by email to school boards and schools across Canada. Feature Article: Tracking School Health Research, News and Resources

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Insider Report, a monthly newsletter published as part of the services provided by the International School Health Network. The content of this report is gleaned from the ISHN School Health Insider Blog and Networking Web Site that scans the research articles being published in over 50 journals, the news from over 40 media outlets and the content being published on formal web sites as well as in the ever increasing networking web sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and the other web sites that publish presentations (SlideShare, YouTube), documents (GoogleDocs, DocStoc) and web bookmarks (Delicious, Digg).

This first issue of our monthly report shows what ISHN members and subscribers will receive each week if they choose to visit the www.schoolhealthinsider.org web site (or receive email or RSS alerts) The content of the web site is provided by several school health associations around the world as part of their membership services. We scan multiple sources of research, news and resources and then present it in a convenient, concise format on the web site. Members and subscribers can also receive daily updates through our Twitter account at www.twitter.com/SHInsidertweets

Currently, all of these services are free on a trial basis. As of March 31, 2010, individuals, organizations and countries/states will be able to purchase a subscription or license. This service will be also available in tandem with other ISHN services such as webinars, web meetings and symposia.

This report has three sections. The first section provides a series of observations and a complete listing of articles published this month in peer reviewed journals and research review web sites. The second section is a listing of news articles with convenient web links provided. The third section, one which will be expanded greatly over the coming months, lists some of the web sites, planning tools and other resources that we have identified in our traveling across the world wide web.

Research Articles and Reviews

The following citations were located in our scanning of over 50 peer reviewed journals and research review web sites. We have identified articles that relate to school-based or school-linked health promotion, safety, social development and other similar forms of human development. Please note that not all journals publish on a monthly basis, so this monthly list may not include a specific journal of interest to you. Please review our list of sources. We welcome suggestions for other journals that should be monitored.

Our observations this month

As we post the list of articles in the weekly blog, we try to alert readers to interesting items of trends that have caught our eye. Here are the observations we made in January 2010. (We are currently working on a more substantive content analysis of the research for 2009 and would welcome others who are interested in being part of this report. New Reviews and Protocols in Cochrane Database (Issue 4, 2009) include preventing eye injuries, pre-school interventions for disadvantaged children, cash transfers and health outcomes, traditional healers, preventing unintended pregnancies and continuous improvement in health care and health promotion.
The phrase `sex. drugs and rock`n`roll`` comes to mind when reading the articles in the January Issue of Journal of Adolescent Health Several articles discuss the connection between sexual risk-taking and other behaviours.
Communities of Practice are emerging as a new way of doing business in staff development. Several articles in the January issue of Teaching & Teacher Education discuss this concept in describing how teachers learn. Interestingly, the same CoP idea is used to describe how groups of young people (such as skateboarders and graffiti artists) also learn from each other.
For mental health: Two aspects of the mind; time perspectives and mindfulness are explored in articles in the January Issue of the British Journal of Guidance & Counselling
Internet-based learning is highlighted in the January Issue of Journal of Food Science Education and in the January Issue of Intervention in School and Clinic
Disabilities (intellectual, physical and learning) are sometimes a "blind spot" in school health, safety and social development but inequality and disadvantage appear to influence the delivery of these services as well. The in January Issue of Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities has three articles on this topic.
Critical Thinking skills is addressed in SH related articles in the January Issue of Preventing School Failure

In its statement about ten key implementation strategies in school health promotion, ISHN suggests that clusters of related behaviours can be addressed by synergistic combinations of programs. The January issue of Psychology in the Schools has a focus on the application of prevention science to issues such as program sustainability, dissemination and diffusion of effective programs. Understanding the reality of teacher work life is a focus for three articles in the January Issue of Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance .
The social influences on physical activity are examined in the December 2009 issue of the Qualitative Research on Physical Activity. The role of the PE teacher or coach is emphasized.
Intelligence is examined as a factor in health in an article in the in the Health. Higher levels of childhood cognition are positively correlated with lower levels of cardiovascular disease.
