The Canadian Association for School Health has been working with number of organizations in supporting school health promotion efforts across Canada. As part of the networking activity CASH is working to develop Communities of Practice on particular issues, including Substance Abuse Prevention. This CoP presents an opportunity to support knowledge exchange, foster coordination and collaboration on a variety of projects of interest to its participants by bring together national non-government organizations, researchers, local agency practitioners (e.g. school district and health authority professionals) and others as interested. There are several opportunities that are being planned to support the exchange of evidence-informed practices, resources and research.

The Community of Practice meets via teleconference approximately 3-4 times per year. Minutes and items of interested for each of these calls are included under each meeting date link noted on the left side bar. For more about the Community of Practice or to join it contact Doug McCall at: dmccall@cash-aces.ca

Practical activities geared to helping support effective practice include:

  • School Health Webinars: These are 60 minute, web/phone based seminars presented by a blend of research experts and practitioners. Each session is very topic specific (e.g. evidance based curriculum; brief interventions for aboriginal students; developing/supporting school policy etc.). More about the webinars program can be seen at: http://www.safehealthyschools.org/webinars/introduction.htm.
  • Schools & Substance Abuse Prevention Annual Symposium: This day-long focus on a comprehensive approach to this issue was held in conjunction with the 4th annual National School Health Conference held in Gatineau, PQ. For more information see: www.safehealthyschools.org/shconferences.
  • Wiki toolbox: This virtual filing cabinet contains over 200 substance abuse prevention and schools related research, policy, program and practice related work underway in Canada and internationally. Contributions to this toolbox are encouraged. A related wiki, focused on good practices based on evidence and experience, is found at http://schoolssubstanceabuseprevention.wetpaint.com.
